A multiplayer Paper.io game you can play with friends
Butter.io is a free multiplayer territory game in the style of Paper.io. You steer a jelly cube around the map, draw a trail out of your land, and close the loop to claim everything inside it. Cross another player's trail to knock them out, and get home before anyone crosses yours. It runs in your browser on a computer or a phone, with no download and no account.
How to play
- Pick a nickname and press Play. You join the next public match, which starts within 20 seconds.
- Steer with your mouse. On a phone, touch anywhere and drag the joystick that comes up under your thumb.
- Leave your land to draw a trail, then come back to claim all the ground the loop surrounds.
- Run over another player's trail to knock them out. Your trail is just as open to them until you're back on your land.
- A match lasts 3 minutes and you get one life. Whoever holds the most land at the end wins.
Play with friends
Press the friends button next to Play to open a private room. You get an invite link to send to your friends, and the match starts when you, the host, press Start. Matches have five players and bots fill any empty seats, so even two of you get a full game. When it ends, everyone stays in the same room for a rematch.
Questions
Is Butter.io free?
Yes. It's free to play in your browser, with no download and no account.
Is Butter.io like Paper.io?
Yes, it's the same kind of game: draw trails to claim territory and cut off the other players. Butter.io is built for playing with friends, with private rooms you share by link.
How many players are in a match?
Five. If fewer people join, bots take the empty seats, so a match always has a full map.
Can I play on my phone?
Yes. On a touch screen, a joystick comes up under your thumb wherever you touch, and you steer by dragging.
What happens if my connection drops?
A bot keeps playing your cube, and you have 30 seconds to take it back. The page tries to reconnect on its own, or you can reload it.
